Most people want a long, healthy life, so they eat well, take vitamins, exercise, and meditate. These habits support mental and physical health, yet light—especially from the sun—also plays a role. Through light, human life may be extended.

It may sound surprising, but the idea is grounded in science. Longevity strategies aim to extend life expectancy; nutrition, exercise, and vitamins are familiar tools, yet they rarely include using light to support the body.

LED light therapy offers notable health benefits. In 1965, NASA began using light therapy to help astronauts readapt after zero-gravity missions and later applied it to other medical conditions. How might it influence lifespan?

Sunlight contains a full spectrum; some wavelengths are visible, others are not. Research suggests each visible color can affect human health, with red and near-infrared light showing the strongest effects. When these wavelengths penetrate the skin, they may improve cellular health and, in turn, influence longevity.

Professor Glen Jeffery of University College London examined red light’s impact on fruit flies and noted, “We improved the flies’ metabolism, they lived longer, and were healthier in old age. Cognitively, they remembered things they otherwise would not.”

Red-light exposure may support life expectancy by stimulating ATP production in mitochondria. ATP is the energy-carrying molecule cells need to repair tissue and reduce inflammation and pain. While evidence is still emerging, healthier cells could contribute to longer, better health.

Red light therapy may also support the immune system by encouraging new cell growth, helping the body stay resilient against everyday threats. Living long and staying healthy are separate goals, yet light therapy might assist with both.

Beyond internal benefits, red light therapy can reduce fine lines and wrinkles and increase collagen production, so users often look as well as feel more youthful. In short, red light offers multiple supportive properties that may complement a longevity routine.
